That week end, in Taitung district, we visited also Chulun village - famous for its dairy farm - where the Puyuma community organized a festival on the grounds of the elementary school. Some elders were watching the young adults, themselves watching on the younger ones. The age class system is very strong among the Puyuma and the rituals for the passage to adulthood are still very important. On these pictures, you can clearly distinguish the different classes of age by the way the individuals belonging to the same group are dressed.  The young girls danced, and the young boys courage was tested by whipping their legs with hitchy leaves, while they hold a knife high in one hand. Then came the traditional ritual/game of throwing high in the air a kind of  ball that the people had to catch on the top of a long bamboo stick.
