Posted 04/03/2008 09:49:52 PM | | I'm too late for the ones that wanted to attend the Mayasvi ceremony this year, but I'm in advance for 2009. If you are in Taiwan next year at this time of the year, I strongly advise you to go the Mayasvi, a traditional ceremony, in the remote Tefuye village, near Alishan. This is a Tsou ceremony for the warriors and the hunters. The Tefuye people have kept on their tradition without advertising it.
I'm just back from the ritual that took place last Saturday. My 8 year old daughter was with me. She took the pictures, and from where we were sitten, we couldn't have the best angle as it was forbidden to move during the ceremony. Anyway, the pictures are interesting, and I selected few of them hereafter.
The elders from the village are dreaming of the spirits that tell them when the ceremony has to be organized. The traditional chief will lead it, followed by the best hunter that is, in that case, my friend Voyu (1) that welcomed me so well with his wife, Liu Qin (pic. 2 - 3rd from right. At the beginning of the ceremony, a pig was slaughtered (pic3), then the men cut the branches of the sacred tree (4) before going to dance and sing (5). They came back to the Kuba (6), the men's house, where they initiated some male children (7). They came back to dance and sing with the women this time (other pics). Then, they went around the village.
Enjoy the pictures !
